Overview
Unity Health Source serves 260,000+ patients across the US with home medical equipment. Their platform needed to handle enterprise-scale product cataloguing, HIPAA compliance, FDA certification display, and a 98% on-time delivery promise that needed to be backed by real-time logistics data.
The Challenge
At 260K+ patients and growing, their existing Shopify store was hitting the limits of what the platform could handle without expensive custom app development. Insurance verification was handled manually by staff, the product catalogue had inconsistent FDA data, and their 98% on-time delivery claim had no platform backing — it was just a statistic on a static page with no real-time context to give it credibility.
Our Solution
We built a custom Next.js platform with headless commerce (Medusa.js backend) to handle the product and order complexity at scale. Insurance verification was integrated into the product page flow with real-time eligibility checks. A live delivery tracker widget was built on top of their logistics API, turning the 98% on-time claim into a live, verifiable dashboard element that built trust at the moment of purchase.
How We Did It
Audited the existing Shopify setup and identified the six core features requiring custom app development that would be more efficiently served by a headless architecture. Proposed and scoped the Medusa.js migration.
Implemented HIPAA technical safeguards throughout: AES-256 data encryption at rest, TLS 1.3 in transit, role-based access for staff, session timeout controls, and comprehensive audit logging.
Built a live delivery tracker pulling from their logistics API, showing estimated delivery windows, current order status, and carrier tracking — displayed contextually on product pages and account dashboards.
Built a verified-purchase patient review system (distinct from generic product reviews) with structured data markup for Google rich results — directly contributing to the 4.9/5 rating visible in search.
"The platform we now have could genuinely compete with the biggest players in the medical supply space. The logistics widget alone has reduced our inbound "where is my order" calls by 40%."
