Overview
SG Medical Supply needed a HIPAA-compliant e-commerce platform that could process insurance verification in-flow, display FDA-certified product data accurately, and convert patients searching for home medical equipment into completed orders — without a sales call.
The Challenge
The business was processing most orders over the phone because their website couldn't handle the complexity of the purchasing process: patients needed to verify insurance eligibility before knowing their out-of-pocket cost, and the product catalogue had strict FDA labelling requirements that a generic WooCommerce build couldn't enforce. Roughly 60% of online visitors were abandoning the site to call instead.
Our Solution
We built a custom e-commerce platform with an integrated insurance verification widget (connecting to the client's existing eligibility API), FDA-compliant product data structures, and a checkout flow that dynamically calculated patient cost after insurance. The platform was built to HIPAA technical safeguard standards: encrypted data transmission, session controls, and audit logging throughout.
How We Did It
Mapped HIPAA technical safeguard requirements against the planned feature set. Defined data handling rules for PHI at every touchpoint: form inputs, API calls, session storage, and server logs.
Built a custom insurance verification widget integrating with the client's eligibility API. Patients enter their insurance details at product level and receive a real-time eligibility check and cost estimate before checkout.
Designed a product schema that enforced FDA labelling fields (510(k) clearance number, intended use, contraindications) as required fields for every product entry — making compliance structural rather than procedural.
A/B tested the checkout flow across four variants. The winner — showing the insurance-adjusted price prominently on the product page before the add-to-cart action — produced a 44% higher checkout completion rate.
"Patients can now go from arriving on the site to completing an insurance-verified order entirely online. That used to be impossible for us. The compliance groundwork they laid is also saving us significant audit risk."
